Foil is mainly the weapon with which beginners will learn the basics of fencing. The hits can only be given by using the
tip of the blade. A foil weighs approximatively 500g and is 110cm long.
The practice of foil is regulated by rights of priority. This means that the fencer who wants to give a valid hit on his
opponent will have to take at first the priority by threatening a valid target area of his opponent’s body or after having
parried the attack of the opponent.
The valid target area of the body is limited. Only the hits given on the chest of the opponent are considered as valid.
Therefore, since the introduction of the electric equipment, fencers who practice foil wear a conductive jacket (called
a “lame jacket”) which covers only the valid target area and which helps to materialize the validity of the hit
given by the opponent. In this way, a valid hit will light up a green or a red light, while a non-valid hit will light up
a white light.
