The event
The Master André Verhalle Challenge was created in 1988 by the fencing club of the Gendarmery.

This Challenge is aiming at three objectives :

- To honour André Verhalle, great champion and renowned fencing master ;
- To establish a big international fencing tournament in the capital of Europe ;
- To promote fencing.

The first editions of this tournament were individual épée events which attracted to Brussels the most famous fencers. Years after years, the event expanded and gained popularity. Unfortunately, after 1993, the fencing club of the Gendarmery lost the capacity to organize the challenge.

As of 1995, the Maison de l'Escrime took over the organization of the event. While keeping the same objectives, we innovated the event by turning the original individual competition to a team competition, composed of three fencers according to the world championship and olympic formula. This formula, relatively rare among the international fencing events, attracts a large amount of highly trained fencing teams.

As of 1995, the team tournament attracted the large majority of the belgian clubs as well as several internationally renowned foreign clubs.

After a small absence in 1996, the challenge was organized again in 1997 and kept on being organized since then.
