The Maison de l’Escrime is depositary of the Royal Oath of Saint Michel and Gudule (also known as the Oath of the Fencers
of Brussels), created in 1480, and therefore annually organizes the Tir du Roy and takes part to the Ommegang parade.
This consist in a parade that takes place in the central streets of Brussels, ending on the Grand Place.
Several different Oaths are represented (Oath of the Fencers, Oath of the Crossbow-shooters, Oath of the Bow-shooters etc.),
all dressed in their 16th century historical costumes.
The Tir du Roy is a single hit épée tournament. The winner is granted the right to play the role of the "Roy" (the leader,
marching in front of the Oath of the Fencers) during the Ommegang.
