The event
The Claude Hulin Challenge was created in 2004 with regard to give to the ladies the opportunity to take part to an international team tournament. Our goal was also to pay a tribute to the achievements of Claude Hulin who was a member of our club and who use to be a leading figure among the Belgian fencing ladies over almost three decades (from the 70's to the 90's).

Claude Hulin is a former Olympic fencer. She holds 17 titles as senior Champion of Belgium (11 times in foil, 6 times in épée). Other titles such as those won in team tournaments or in younger categories have to be also taken into account (40 national titles in total). She went up to the 9th place at the Olympic games in Munich, has challenged many world cup finals and she is the holder of many victories in national and international tournaments.

The first editions of the Hulin Challenge were based on the model of the Verhalle Challenge, that is to say a team competition, each team being composed of 3 or 4 fencers. Unfortunately, we never managed to reach the same level as the one of the Verhalle Challenge. Indeed, there are fewer fencing clubs that are able to set up a high level team of 3 ladies than clubs able to set up a high level team of 3 men.

Consequently, we took the decision to test other formulas, keeping in mind that the tournament had to remain a team tournament in the which each team had to be composed of at least one lady. Eventually, the best formula that we have experienced is the one that we are applying today, that is to say a two members mixed team tournament. This special formula - which is very seldom encountered - is not part of the official formulas which are applied by the International Fencing Federation. Thereby, it gives to the participants a unique opportunity to meet other international fencers, who they would normally not meet during a classic tournament.
